About this blog
This blog is no longer being used for its original purpose. Announcements that used to be posted here are now part of the new LLI website. This wordpress.com blog is now being used for WordPress training purposes.
The new website is based on the powerful wordpress.org Content Management System (CMS) software designed for simple blogging or complex websites. Specifically for bloggers, wordpress.com uses is a simpler version of the WordPress software. Up to a point, the dashboards for both versions are almost identical.
In the posts below, when a distinction is needed, the word blog signifies what’s done here at wordpress.com.
The word website signifies what’s done at the website with the WordPress software.
At Settings > Privacy I have specified: I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors . There is another option to make it totally private.
Hint: adding a line space
I asked Sean how to do it. This is a rare case of having to insert html code.
CMS like WordPress deletes line spaces. Shift+Enter will give you a new paragraph. But if you’d like a larger space, you would have to go to the HTML.
You can add space like this:
<p style=”margin-top: 30px;”> …content… </p>
or like this:
<div style=”margin-top: 30px;”> …content… </div>
The different kinds of WordPress

I just found this WordPress write-up about the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org.
Under WordPress.com cons: You can’t hack the PHP code behind your blog.
The LLI website (WordPress.org) depends on hacking the PHP code, which must be done by the designer.
Settings>General change
I changed the email address to lilyfredi@gmail.com so that notices of new posts and comments will be sent to that address, our “community” storehouse of WordPress-related correspondence.
Marilyn’s Request
This is a new post by someone who has never used WordPress before. I like the name – WordPress. It reminds me of my typography classes and the introduction to the LetterPress
You said “…. succeed in creating a new post and performing some other operations”. Here is the post, what are the other operations?
Lesson 1: Create and publish a post
Write anything you want to in the post just to let us know you are here.
WordPress themes
At wordpress.com it’s possible to switch themes quickly.
See on left sidebar Appearance > Themes.
The current theme is The Journalist v1.9.
Feel free to change it.
Posts and pages
Posts are entries listed in reverse chronological order on the blog home page.
Pages are static and are not listed by date.
The post titled About this blog is a “sticky post” that doesn’t move down.
Posts and pages are used in this blog and on the website.
On the website, the posts are not arranged in chronological order.
Posts and pages are published instantly with the Publish > Update.
It annoys me that the dashboard doesn’t provide a way to view the whole blog, so I keep it open in a separate tab or window: http://lifetimelearners.wordpress.com/

The WordPress visual editor
While writing or editing a post or a page, you will almost always use the visual editor (not the HTML editor).
Above the text-entry form, there are Upload/Insert buttons, and one or two rows of editing buttons.
If the second row disappears, click the show/hide kitchen sink button, first row far right.

LLI classroom standards
Punctuality. Students are expected to be in their seats before the Facilitator begins the class and prior to its resumption after the break. In the event a student is late to class, he or she should go quietly to the nearest empty seat. Any handouts or exhibits the Facilitator distributed are to be picked up during the break. Conversely, a student who must leave early should leave unobtrusively and quietly close the door.
Deportment. Lifetime Learners prides itself on the broad spectrum of views its Facilitators explore. Members may not agree with some of the views expressed and discussion of our differences is both healthy and encouraged. Nonetheless, we must disagree agreeably. Inappropriate language, raised voices and ad hominem arguments will not be tolerated.
Cell phones. Cell phones must be turned off for the duration of each class. In the rare event a member is expecting a very important call, the phone should be set to vibrate and the call taken outside the classroom.
Food and beverages. While beverages are permitted, food is prohibited. Eating in the classroom is disturbing to other students and detracts from a positive learning environment.
